IBS and the Christmas Season

So, the dreaded season of eating, overeating and stress!

Whether you can eat normally with your IBS or not this is still a tough season to manage with everything that it entails on a normal day let alone during the time of COVID-19 restrictions. Often the aftermath is pain, sore and discomfort alongside many of us nausea is also part of the deal.

The reality is tough to manage leaving us drained, flailing and struggling to get through the days with all the other requirements on our time. We are left drained with some residue of anxiety and depression lingering on for weeks or even months.

The Christmas season has left me struggling even to this day, the truth is I was suffering with symptoms as we came into January I suffered with bloating, constipation and soreness which resonates through the day. Where even now I am struggling to manage my symptoms while allowing myself to enjoy some food and drinks.

Managing these symptoms can be hard to figure out especially as a busy parent with a household to run and ensure that everything is done before you can rest yourself. I have found that I am spending more time trying to rest but not actually doing so as there is everything else to do and organise before I get back to university studying with a 3-year-old who has been through another urine infection and struggling with her emotions.

On the other side of Christmas, it was less pressure this year on the day as with all the restrictions and the reality of the season this year. We loved spending time with our little family in our home with the lack of interruptions and family requiring attention. In my family, we always spent time with our intricate family and spent the rest of the holiday visiting family whereas my partner has a very different upbringing with family having more wanting to be involved requiring visiting and seeing people at “parties”.

I love Christmas, like absolutely love Christmas its such an important and special time especially with having a little one who now loves presents and the excitement of the whole season with lights, presents to open and family time to treasure. This year was specifically important to make as special to her as possible due to all the issues with Covid-19 and its restrictions involved during the year.

And for the Christmas Day itself was amazing and I hope yours was too!

My little one loving opening her Christmas prezzies! Isn't she gorgeous though?
